Call Me A Cynic, But...

I was leaving Wal-Greens tonight after getting stuff for my kiddos for the last day of school tomorrow and as I got to my car I was approached by this guy who'd just crossed 27th street and was heading toward the store. He looks upset, tells me this story about how he and his wife just moved here from Iowa...he showed me his driver's license...they have no money, and that they didn't even have a Christmas tree and they didn't have money for gifts for their four kids or even a turkey or anything for Christmas dinner. He says he's been to churches and talked to pastors and has been crying all day about it and his wife has too. So here's when he asks me for money. He says the usual stuff, he knows I'm probably not rich, that he doesn't usually do this, but he wants his kids to have a good Christmas, etc. The teacher in me is thinking about these poor kids who won't have a good Christmas because their family doesn't have any money. The realist in me is thinking that this guy is probably bullshitting me and needs the money for something a little less honest. Maybe not. Who knows. Either way, I gave him $20. Maybe I shouldn't have, but who knows, maybe he was telling me the truth. I'd like to think so, but I'm not counting on it..

Youre a better person than I am. I hate those people because theyre always at my store harassing my customers for money. I generally get one of the boys to tell them to move along because well, the boys are intimidating and I am not.
Have a happy time in MN and give everyone my love. I'll do the same.

I guess, but our store never has people standing outside asking for money. And he really wasn't just hanging out, he hadn't been there when I went in, and he was crossing the street when I came out of the store. Ah well, it was only $20.
